Editorial Appetizer


I was at the computer working when I got her call. Sharon was crying. In between sobbing and blowing her nose she explained what had transpired between her and James.

“I told you from the beginning I wasn’t leaving her. Besides we’ve just found out we’re having a baby.”

“Why do you think you can treat me like this?”

“Because you let me. I know I can have something with her. Don’t call me anymore.”

And with that he left ending their three-year affair.

I interrupted her story to ask, “What did you think was going to happen?”

“Yeah, I know you were right, but I love him. I’ve put so much time into this relationship, I can’t believe he’d just do this.”

“Believe it because he has, now what are you going to do?” I asked.

Recently it seems I’ve had more people inquire about my understanding of entrepreneurship in a therapeutic self-help context. Understand that I make no claims about being a doctor or mental health expert.

What I am talking about is information that is available to anyone to be employed in your individual self-help improvement programs. I feel that counseling models have something to offer even to the layperson or personal coach.

Besides being someone who's been happily married for fourteen years, I've worked with alot of different kinds of people, but there are things that have stood out to me as commonalities.

Let me explain, my background in community programming and personal coaching have made me very aware of where the challenges are in developing programs that actually work over.

I don’t advocate the use of starting a business to avoid the reality of feelings, but rather that emotions cannot always dictate our actions.

The above story is a perfect example. What you didn’t see in that little dialogue is that because Sharon has been so consumed with doomed relationships she has neglected her personal development, as well as the relationships that are actually the most significant in her life.

She had talked about going back to school to take some classes so she could get a better position with the pharmaceutical company she worked for or even starting her own business. It is also worth noting that her involvement with James wasn’t the only relationship falling apart. She had about four others that were in about the same state.

She made a conscious choice again and again to put her energy into relationships that not only didn’t serve her, but also devastated the families betrayed by the affairs. Meanwhile, her financial situation didn’t improve and she felt worse about herself.

An important issue that I see reoccurring is that many people do not know how to distinguish between their ego and their intuition. They follow their emotions, constantly ending up at dead ends, and thinking they are following their intuition.

It is being with yourself honestly that helps to hone your connection to your intuition. And by the same token a different kind of discipline and perseverance results in success that, with a balance holistic approach, can brighten your entire existence.

In such cases, therapy and counseling models provide a road map in developing intervention programs that work. I use the term intervention because often when people come to me they are stuck in an emotional rut that may have lasted for years. Interestingly, it is not uncommon for that to accompany a financial one as well.

A definite change in behavior is required and because most people need more money it is an assessable need to begin with to motivate changes. On a personal level it is natural to be defensive about the attributes you accept as being you, even if they are self-defeating.

In the next issue I’ll talk more about those counseling models and how they apply to therapeutic entrepreneurship that empowers by cultivating a success mindset and the track record to back it up.

This is the place where I answer the relationship help, business or personal, that matters most to you.

I’d say one that seems to be flaring up lately is how to handle difficult relationships? Since the context of the most recent inquiry was regarding professional dealings that’s how I’ll address it here.

First, I’d say you have to get honest with yourself and be specific. Deal with your feelings and issues first before confronting the other person.

By that I mean, what is it about what’s occurring that is upsetting to you? Why? Does it make you feel belittled or taken for granted? Is that a common theme in your life/relationships?

Probe to find out why you have allowed it thus far? Is there a power dynamic that makes you feel vulnerable?

Now what purpose does this relationship serve for you? Can the need be met in another way?

Have all of this worked out before you talk to the person. Then when you do, simply inform them of the decision you’ve made. If the relationship is to continue, for whatever reasons, then this will be a dialogue opener. Your goal is to establish a new dynamic in the relationship. But if the relationship is being terminated, then a simple explanation will do.

The bottom line is to know you and be prepared. The common denominator in all your relationships is you, so start there with any problem.
